Professional

Matthew is one of the few orthopaedic surgeons in the UK who specialises exclusively in treating patients with hip problems.

He studied Medicine at the Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, University of London, qualifying in 1988.

Having trained in Orthopaedic Surgery on the North West Thames rotation, he completed his training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, working with the renowned Mr Stephen Cannon and Professor Tim Briggs.

He received further specialist training, undertaking a Fellowship in Adult Reconstructive Hip Surgery (as Clinical Lecturer in the Orthopaedic Department) with Professor Don Howie at the University of Adelaide in South Australia.

Appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal United Hospital Bath in August 1999, Matthew took up his appointment on returning from Australia in April 2000. In addition, he is honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases Bath where he has led the Hip Clinic since 2000.

Over the years his elective practice has become more specialised – he now concentrates full time on the management of adult hip conditions including non-operative (conservative) management of hip problems as well as surgical treatment including primary and revision hip replacement as well as hip resurfacing in appropriate patients.

He has extensive experience in using all types of hip replacement including cemented, uncemented and hybrid hip replacements and with all the modern bearing options. He has adapted his surgical technique over the years and, along with Accelerated Rehabilitation Protocols, now can ensure safe early discharge from the hospital with a quicker return to an active lifestyle.

In addition to his elective practice he continues to be on the ‘on-call trauma rota’ at the Royal United Hospital in Bath dealing with all aspects of musculoskeletal injuries. he has a regular Specialist Hip Trauma operating list, where patients suffering from recurrent dislocation, or having sustained a fracture around their hip replacement or having complications after hip fracture surgery can be treated.

He has prepared Personal Injury medico-legal reports since 1993. Over recent years, due to the specialist nature of his elective practice, he has been asked to prepare Clinical Negligence reports for the legal profession including ‘Condition and Prognosis’ and ‘Causation and Liability’ reports.

Pioneering developments

He is highly interested in research and is currently involved with a British orthopaedic company in the development of a new type of hip implant for use in younger and more active patients.

With the same company, one of a group of surgeons involved in early clinical trials of a new bearing surface, which will wear less and lead to an increase in the longevity of hip replacements reducing the need for revision surgery.
